My brother Dave Nicoll who was a member probably from 1996 when he built his first coracle on a Terry Kenny’s course on the weekend of the Ironbridge regatta of that year, died on Saturday 20th April after a short illness aged 85
Coracle making course with WoodWorks & Coracles
Saturday 13 August 2016 - 10:00 to Monday 15 August 2016 - 15:30
Build a coracle in a weekend with experienced maker Alistair Phillips, recently featured in an episode of BBC 2's Escape to the Country. Utilising traditional materials with just a few basic hand tools, each two-day course will provide you with a completed and covered coracle frame which you may need to paint at home. Using locally sourced ash laths you will be shown how to weave and assemble the light yet strong basket-work frame so characteristic of the coracle, which can be fitted either with a traditional calico cover (painting at home required) or my super-durable and virtually puncture-proof modern PVC alternative (no painting required - you can paddle it by the end of the course!).
Courses cost either £290 (traditional calico cover) or £345 (indestructible PVC cover), which includes tuition and all materials, an introductory Coracle Society membership, a basic paddle and a dry-bag (essential for keeping your phone and car keys safe whilst out paddling). Refreshments are available but you will need to bring your own packed lunch. See website for more details. I can also supply a list of B&B's/campsites local to the venue. There is no extra charge for two people working together on one coracle.
